Torque Machine: What It Is in the Oilfield, and How to Choose One

An oilfield torque machine makes up and breaks out threaded tubulars under measured torque and records what it did. Types, capacity, control tiers and five acceptance checks.

In the oilfield, a torque machine is a workshop or rig-site unit that makes up and breaks out threaded tubular connections under measured, controlled torque. It clamps two members, rotates one against the other, and records the torque and turns while it does so. That recording is the point. A machine that applies torque without producing a record is a wrench, not a torque machine.

Three different things share this name

Search for a torque machine and you will get results from three unrelated industries. Sorting them out first saves a wasted enquiry.

The rest of this guide covers the fourth row only: the machines that handle drill pipe, casing, tubing, couplings and downhole tools.

What an oilfield torque machine has to do

Oilfield threads are engineered sealing interfaces, not fasteners. A casing connection has to hold pressure for the life of a well, and a drill pipe tool joint has to survive thousands of rotating hours. That puts four jobs on the machine:

  1. Grip without marking. Clamping force has to be enough to stop rotation and no more, because the pipe body is the product.
  2. Rotate under control. Speed has to fall away as the connection approaches final torque, or the joint overshoots.
  3. Measure honestly. Torque taken from pump pressure is an estimate; torque taken from a load cell is a measurement.
  4. Produce a record. A torque-turn curve per joint, exportable, with the joint identity attached.

Types of torque machine, and what separates them

The fixed-arc versus continuous distinction is the one that shows up in the data rather than the brochure. A fixed-arc head has to release and re-grip to keep turning, and every release leaves a step in the recorded curve where torque falls back and climbs again. Those steps are readable and normal, but they make the shoulder harder to identify. Continuous rotation produces one clean rise, which is why premium connection work tends to move that way. Capacity: reading a torque figure properly

Torque ratings are quoted in two different senses and buyers routinely compare the wrong pair. Make-up torque is what the machine can apply in the tightening direction. Break-out torque is what it can apply to open a connection, and it is always the larger number, because a connection that has been in service is harder to open than it was to close.

When a supplier quotes a single headline number, ask which of the two it is. A machine advertised on its break-out figure may make up considerably less than you assumed.

Control level is the specification that actually changes the job

Two machines with the same torque rating can behave completely differently on the shop floor, because the control package is where the money and the capability sit.

The entry tier is often the right answer. It is only wrong when the connections are marking-sensitive or the customer wants a witnessed record per joint, at which point automatic clamping and a proper display stop being luxuries.

Five acceptance checks you can run in an hour

Whether you are witnessing a factory test or commissioning a used machine, these five give you a defensible view quickly. Each has a pass or fail you can write down.

Run these at the torque you will actually work at rather than at a convenient low value, because hydraulic and load cell behaviour is rarely linear across the full range. The wider commissioning sequence is set out in the acceptance and first-job checklist.

What the machine needs from your workshop

Two site questions come up in nearly every enquiry, and the answers are more forgiving than most buyers expect.

  • Floor space. Plan for roughly 13 to 14 m of length and 5 to 6 m of width as clear working area, with the pipe run in mind rather than just the machine footprint.
  • Floor loading. Around 750 kg per square metre.
  • Levelness. No levelness requirement. The unit sits on levelling feet.
  • Ground anchors. None needed. Nothing is bolted into your slab.

That last pair matters more than it sounds. A machine that needs an engineered plinth and anchor bolts turns an equipment purchase into a civil works project, and it makes the unit effectively permanent. Levelling feet keep the option to move it.

When a torque machine is not the right answer

Buyer checklist

  • OD range, smallest and largest, including couplings
  • Make-up and break-out torque required, quoted separately
  • Connection families handled: API, premium, or a mix
  • Jaw and die type, including any coated or chrome material
  • Control tier, judged against whether a witnessed record is required
  • Report format your customers or auditors expect
  • Floor space, floor loading and available power
  • Daily joint count and shift pattern

Frequently asked questions

Is a torque machine the same as a bucking unit?

In the oilfield they describe the same equipment. Bucking unit is the term used in tubular and downhole tool workshops. Torque machine is the broader phrase, and it is also used for bolting tools and calibration benches, which is why enquiries need qualifying.

Why is break-out torque higher than make-up torque?

A connection in service can gall lightly, pick up corrosion product, or be over-torqued in the field. Opening it takes more than closing it did, so the break-out rating is specified above the make-up rating on the same machine.

Can one machine handle drill pipe, casing and tubing?

Within its OD range and torque rating, yes, with the correct jaws and dies for each size and material. The practical limit is usually the jaw set and the changeover time rather than the frame.

Does a pipe torque machine need to be bolted to the floor?

Not on a levelling-foot design. There are no ground anchors and no levelness requirement, so no civil works are needed and the machine can be relocated later.

How accurate does the torque reading need to be?

Accurate enough at the torque you actually work at, which is why the source matters more than the headline figure. A load cell reading is a measurement; a figure derived from pump pressure carries the error of the whole hydraulic circuit.

What records should a torque machine produce?
