TorqueStar SD: Torque-Turn Monitoring Software for Bucking Units

TorqueStar SD is the make-up torque monitoring system that runs on every Galip bucking unit. The operator picks the connection from a library of 4,834 saved specifications, the machine makes the joint up against the target window, the software finds the shoulder on the curve, and a one-page PASS/FAIL report is on disk before the pipe is unclamped.

What the operator sees while the joint is made up

One screen, no menus to dig through while the spindle is turning. Torque in large digits, the curve against the target window, the shoulder band, clamp pressures and a single red stop button.

Torque, peak and turns

Make-up torque in large digits, the peak so far, and turns counted from the start of the joint, all updated live.

Target window on the chart

Maximum, target and minimum torque are drawn as bands on the torque-vs-rotation chart, so the operator sees where the curve is heading, not just a number.

Shoulder range band

The catalogue’s shoulder range sits on the chart as its own band. When the software finds the shoulder, it marks it on the curve and keeps it for the report.

Clamps and status

Front and rear clamp pressure against the set value, plus torque, PLC, rotation and sampling status lights, so a fault shows before it costs a joint.

Speed trace

Spindle speed is plotted against rotation under the torque chart, so a speed change near the shoulder is on the record, not just in the operator’s memory.

Stop, or back it out

One red STOP TEST button, and a break-out/reverse mode for backing a joint out under the same recording.

Shoulder detection

Premium connections are accepted on more than final torque. TorqueStar SD identifies the shoulder point on the torque-turn curve while the joint is being made up, then records shoulder torque, shoulder turns, delta turns and slope factor against the acceptance window the catalogue gives for that connection. The result shows on screen as PASS or FAIL, and the operator confirms it on the review screen before the record is saved.

Connection library

A connection library, not a blank form

The library holds 4,834 saved specifications, filtered by thread family, size, weight, grade and design. Pick one and the target, maximum and minimum torque, the pipe geometry and the grade fill in. Mark favourites for the connections a shop runs every week, add your own specifications, or import a whole list from CSV.

Traceability

The fields your customer will ask about later

Before the joint starts, the operator fills the job fields once: job number, pipe number, sequence, traceability number, customer, thread direction, dump percent, lubricant brand, lubricant and its expiry, and free comments. The library fills the pipe fields. All of it prints on the report and exports with the CSV, so an auditor can tie a curve to a pipe, a lubricant batch and an operator years later.

The report your customer signs

Every joint produces a one-page PDF the moment it is accepted. The curve carries the target window, the shoulder range and the detected shoulder; the speed trace sits under it; four tables give the torque information, connection parameters, connection information and the slope and shoulder datapoints. A PASS or FAIL stamp sits top right, and the raw samples export to CSV for your own analysis.

Operators and access

Operators sign in. Witnesses watch.

Operators sign in by name from the start screen and the name goes on every report. View-only mode lets a customer witness or a supervisor follow the make-up without touching the controls. From the main menu the operator reaches make-up, review, past tests, trends, the live gauge, clamping, calibration and settings; past tests stay on the machine for review, comparison and export.

TorqueStar runs on the bucking unit’s own industrial PC and touch-screen console. It is developed in-house by Galip; the v4.2 shoulder detection build shown on this page is the September 2026 release.

What does torque-turn monitoring software do on a bucking unit?
It records torque against rotation while the connection is made up, compares the curve with the target, maximum and minimum torque for that connection, stops the machine at the target, and keeps the record. On TorqueStar SD the record is a one-page PDF with the curve, the shoulder and four data tables, plus a CSV of every sample.
Does TorqueStar SD detect the shoulder automatically?
Yes. It identifies the shoulder point on the torque-turn curve during the make-up and records shoulder torque, shoulder turns, delta turns and slope factor against the acceptance window held in the connection library for that connection. The shoulder is marked on the curve in the report.
What report does it generate?
